Reverse osmosis systems

Tap water is not an optimal aquarium water. It usually contains impurities such as Chlorine, nitrates and various heavy metals. There may also be residues of various pesticides. These small amounts are still relatively harmless to humans, but these contaminations can cause the greatest damage to our extremely sensitive aquarium inhabitants. Reverse osmosis systems offer the most economical and, at the same time, most efficient method for obtaining the purest and softest water for marine and freshwater aquariums. hw reverse osmosis systems: The most modern, environmentally friendly and effective method of water treatment.

hw Wiegandt, hw Omose-Technik

In most water treatment systems on the market based on ion exchangers, hardness-forming ions (e.g. calcium) are exchanged for other ions (e.g. sodium). This creates a shift in the ion ratio, which leads to unforeseeable consequences in the aquarium. In addition, such systems must be regularly regenerated with chemicals. In contrast, the hw reverse osmosis is a natural and environmentally friendly process in which the dissolved salts and pollutants are safely removed from the water by a purely physical method.

hw-Membrane_Osmose_frei

hw-Reverse-Osmosis-Membrane

All hw reverse osmosis systems are equipped with the unique hw polyvinyl membrane. This membrane consists of a fully synthetic material developed exclusively for hw Wiegandt and outperforms the conventional membrane types, e.g. Acetate, triacetate or polysulfone membranes in durability and retention. This means that the hw polyvinyl membrane cannot be attacked or even destroyed by bacteria, even if it has been down for several weeks (up to 3 months!). In contrast to the frequently used polysulfone membranes, the hw polyvinyl membrane is also mostly insensitive to chlorine in tap water. Because of their sensitivity to chlorine and their poorer performance ratio (permeate to concentrate), we do not use polysulfone membranes in hw reverse osmosis systems. In order to reliably counter membrane destruction even with extreme chlorine concentrations (such as the dreaded shock chlorination of many waterworks), we equip all hw reverse osmosis devices (model series “Super”) despite the aforementioned chlorine insensitivity of our membranes with upstream carbon filters out. The membranes in hw reverse osmosis systems tolerate salinity up to 2,000 mg per liter and are insensitive to carbonate hardness up to 22 ° dKH. Our membranes are completely insensitive to pH values from pH 3 to pH 10 and are suitable for raw water hardness up to max. 30 ° dGH.

without booster pump

The hw reverse osmosis is a natural and environmentally friendly process for physically removing dissolved salts and pollutants from the water. In this process, the water from the household supply is pressed against a semipermeable (= semi-permeable) membrane by the tap water pressure (2 to 6 bar). In this process, only the purest water can penetrate the membrane, salts and pollutants as well as impurities are reliably retained by the membrane and drained together with the residual water (concentrate).

The water obtained in this way is ultrapure water (permeate) and, except of nearly not detectable rest traces, free from harmful impurities. The majority (95% -99%) of the pollutants dissolved in the tap water cannot penetrate the membrane and will be retained.

All hw® reverse osmosis systems are equipped as standard with an hw flushing valve, which has been optimally adapted to the respective membrane. After performing a rinsing process, it is ensured that the system is always operated in the optimal ultra-pure to waste water ratio. An accidental misalignment is therefore not possible.

Working parameters:

  • Water pressure:                     3 bis max. 6 bar
  • Water temperature:                min. 5°C bis max. 40°C
  • Max. water hardness.:           22° dKH und 33° dGH
  • Salinity max.:                         2.000 mg/l
  • Pure to waste water:             1 : 3 ( bis 1 : 3,5)

The reverse osmosis systems are not suitable for the treatment of well water or ground water with an iron content of more than 0.1 mg / l. The dissolved iron precipitates as insoluble iron oxide sludge on the membrane surface and makes the membrane unusable.

The hw®-TFC-Polyvinyl-Membrane

hw® reverse osmosis systems are exclusively equipped with the unique hw®-TFC-Polyvinyl-Membrane. This membrane consists of a fully synthetic material developed exclusively for hw®. This membrane outranges the conventional membrane types like Acetate, triacetate or polysulfone membranes, in durability and performance. This means that the hw®-TFC-Polyvinyl-Membrane cannot be attacked or destroyed by bacteria, even if it has been disconected for several weeks (up to 3 months!).The membranes in hw® reverse osmosis systems tolerate a total salinity up to 2,000 mg per liter and are insensitive to carbonate hardness up to 22 ° dKH.

hw®-TFC-Polyvinyl-Membrane are completely insensitive to pH values from pH 3 to pH 10 and are suitable for raw water hardness up to max. 30 ° dGH.

In order to avoid a possible damage of the Membrane through extreme chlorine concentrations (as for example the usual “shock chlorination’s” of communal water works in southern European countries) we equip all hw-Reverse osmosis units with a high capacity carbon filter. For the hw-Reverse osmosis units distributed for the German market, this carbon filter is installed on the permeat (pure water outlet) to remove rests traces of any aromatics and halogens that may be still present.

If this units would be operated outside Germany and you are insecure concerning the possible chlorine concentrations, we recommend to install this carbon filter on the inlet side between fine filter and membrane housing.

hw autoflush automatisches Spülventil für Umkehr-Osmose-Anlagen

hw® autoflusch

automatic flush valve for reverse osmosis systems

The hw-autoflush® was primarily developed for the automatic control of reverse osmosis devices that are used at operating intervals of several hours.

The hw-autoflush® significantly increases the lifespan of the membrane in reverse osmosis systems and provides optimal control between the production and necessary rinsing intervals.

The interval rinsing ensures that deposits do not form on the membrane surface due to crystallization, as can otherwise occur during longer production phases.

As soon as the reverse osmosis system is put into operation, the hw-autoflush® switches to a rinsing process in order to remove old water from the system. After switching to production mode, the hw-autoflush® now automatically controls the interval rinses. Due to the hourly interval rinsing of 10 to 15 seconds, compared to the manual rinsing process lasting several minutes after a longer production time, the cleaning effect of the rinsing process is increases and the total water consumption will be significantly reduced.

The reverse osmosis system can be operated almost maintenance-free, except for occasional changes of sediment or carbon filter. The annoying track keeping of the necessary rinsing intervals is completely eliminated. This is an immense advantage, especially for automatic refill systems.

hw-autoflush®

  • Automatic interval flushing every 50 – 60 minutes of operation
  • Automatic self-cleaning of the flush valve
  • Hermetically sealed, robust electromechanics for an extremely long service life
  • Easily upgradeable for almost all conventional reverse osmosis systems
  • Ideal for all areas where minimal maintenance level is required

Installing the hw-autoflush® as upgrade to an R/O unit with flow restrictor or manual flushing valve:

In this case, the hw-autoflush® is mounted with a T-piece (item no. Hw-019360 for 1/4 “outer diameter approx. 6.3 mm) between the membrane housing and the existing flow restrictor /flushing valve of the reverse osmosis unit. The manual flush valve of the device is then set once to the desired ultra-pure to wastewater ratio (not necessary with flow restrictor). After starting the hw-autoflush®, it then automatically controls the rinsing intervals. Further on, the manual flush valve only serves as a simple flow restrictor!
