Treatment against Oodinium in marine aquarium

hw® odinex is one of the most reliable remedy against Oodinium and Cryptocarion  in marine aquariums. hw® odinex has been successfully been proofed several million times in over 30 years of intensive research and is considered as indispensable in the marine aquaristic when a treatment against Oodinium and Cryptocarion is needed.

hw® odinex should not to be confused with doubtful copper solutions of varying concentration.  Although hw® odinex contains among other active substances, copper, and is far better tolerated by the animals than pure copper preparations.

Important!

  • hw® odinex is lethal for all invertebrates like anemones, all kind of corals, mollusks, crustacea, crabs, shrimps, etc.
  • hw® odinex should be only applied in marine fish aquarium!
  • Ozonisation has to be turned OFF, to ensure that unwanted interaction is avoided!

Description

Indication and how to start:

When noticing the lightest sign of an outbreak of Oodinium or Cryptocarion a direct dosing of 1 ml hw® odinex per every 10 liters (1,5 ml per every 4 US gal.) aquarium water should be made.

Treatment cycle:

  • On the 1. day apply a dosing of 1 ml hw® odinex per every 10 liters (1,5 ml per every 8 US gal.) of aquarium water.
  • On the 2. and 3. day apply a dosing of 1 ml hw® odinex per every 20 liters (1,5 ml per every 8 US gal.) of aquarium water.
  • By an infection with Oodinium the symptoms starts to disappear regularly after the 3. treatment day and the treatment is finished after the 4. day.
  • If the symptoms remain the treatment cycle has to be repeated after finishing the 4. day of previous treatment cycle.

Infection with Cryptocarion:

If the infection is caused through Cryptocarion, as this pathogen is more resistant,  the treatment can extend up to 14 treatment days.

Things to know before and during the treatment:

The treatment can often be favorably influenced by increasing the temperature to about 28°C.  At this lightly elevated temperature, development of the pathogens is greatly accelerated, so that the spore phase (in which the neutralization of the pathogen is only possible) is reached more quickly.

During the treatment the aquarium water should be only filtered mechanically via gravel, filter wadding or other neutral filter media. During the treatment cycle the Protein skimmer will almost show a increased activity and should be turned on but without any kind of azonisation!

Biological filter systems, such as trickle filters, etc., can remain in the water circulation system. However, damage to the bacterial flora in these filters with extended duration of treatment cannot be completely excluded.  On completion of treatment, this bacterial flora will normally recuperate within a few days.

hw® UV-Watersterilizer can and should remain switched on, as they would greatly supporting the treatment.
Ozonisation has to be turned OFF in any way, to ensure that unwanted interaction with the active substances of hw® odinex is avoided!

Since the animals already have oxygen absorption difficulties, depending on the intensity of the disease, it is important to ensure an god working gaseous exchange of the aquarium water to offer a good oxygen level. An additional aeration with air pump, in combination with hw® Limewood-air-diffuser can be a great help to elevate the oxygen level in the aquarium water.

In the case of organically heavily loaded aquarium water (like it is to find in fish aquarium with high life stock density), an oxygen deficiency can occur when using hw® odinex, since a certain degree of oxygen depletion occurs due to the active substances.
If it is noticed that the fishes shows higher breathing activity (mouth and gill cover moving very fast) or fishes shows permanent opened gill cover, it may be necessary to transfer the fishes immediately into fresh water with an higher oxygen level.

When treatment is finished:

A change of water after treatment is normally unnecessary, since 99 per cent of the active substances precipitate within 10 days after the last addition, i.e. the active substances enter into combinations which cease to be soluble under normal conditions.
However, if after treatment, any invertebrates should be  placed in the aquarium, it is advisable to previously change the aquarium ground material, the filter substrate and the aquarium water, since the active substances can be reactivated through an oxidation process, as it occurs when applying Ozone to the aquarium water.

hw® odinex should not to be confused with doubtful copper solutions of varying concentration.  Although hw® odinex contains among other active substances, copper, and is far better tolerated by the animals than pure copper preparations.
